On the 5th of February Escape appeared at Inspired Gaming Groups Industry Party at the Gherkin Roofbar in the City of London.
We played in an unplugged format in front of a crowd of 250 international guests!
We would like to thank Luke Alvarez and Lucy Buckley for making it possible for us to appear in such a fantastic setting!
In late January a group of Styrian artists set out to conquer Los Angeles.
On invitation of our friend Chris Samu we went to visit the world’s largest music industry show NAMM in Anaheim, California.
We stands for:
Markus Bieder – owner of “Projact Studios” in Thal and leader of the band “Klimmstein”
Nikolai Blaskovic – owner of “The Guitar School” Graz and Escape lead guitar player
Gerhard Burda - owner of “Escapes Productions” and Escape Singer/Songwriter
Salvatore Denaro - professional multi-instrumentalist and Escape drummer
Gernot Hoefler – sound engineer and gear wizard
Roland Krainz - sound engineer, producer, mastermind and Escape keyboarder
For one week we felt like Alice in Wonderland!
All that gear, all this famous musicians (we met with Steve Lukather, Tony Levin, Doyle Dykes and many more).
Very special encounters we had with our (now) friend T.M. Stevens, who bravely kept up with the Austrians when it came to Jaegermeister and Red Bull Vodka….as well as Michael Landau, who appeared at the “Baked Potato” in L.A. and we happened to hang out with him at the back door talking gear and vintage guitars.
For the recording freaks of our group, meeting Rupert Neve and Dave Pensado at L.A.’s Vintage King undoubtedly represented another highlight.
Thanks to Kate Sumner we got a tour through Henson Studios in L.A. Special thanks go to Faryal Russell, who took the time to give us the history of this fantastic place to record music.
Faryal, hope you liked the Austrian chocolate!
No doubt that “We’ll be back”!
Dear “Escape” Community
We received a fantastic feedback of our new album from a Canadian friend who is a musician himself. We wanted to share this with you as he hits the nail on the head with his analysis!
I have had your album in the car for quite a while now and I have to say that you should be very proud of this record. The production from beginning to end is really really good, the highest quality. The guitar tones are excellent throughout, and the drums are superb. You clearly have a good thing with this drummer, I can hear it. I hope you were as pleased with the result as I am as a listener.
There are quite a few standout moments that really have been sticking with me. The vibrato on the leads is always just right – sometimes delicate, sometimes very aggressive. Some very emotive playing and I really appreciate this in a record.
The first track makes the statement… attention listener, you have bought a rock record! … and no mistake about it you delivered on the promise.
The leads in “golden cage” are perfect, perfect… the tone and the playing… I find it often overdone to do this through a whole song, most will go too far. Nicely done. A lot of great details like this everywhere, like the end of “playing my guitar”, that little extra part on the end of the chorus toward the outro. Obviously a lot of thinking on the arrangements was done.
“Maker of doom” is such an intense song – “you’re the creator of nothing”… great powerful vocal on this part. The emotion is there again.
“Airborne” is possibly my favorite song on this record. Truly this song speaks to me, in the music and the words. The chorus guitar is like a rocket. Very powerful. Don’t be insecure, you are airborne!
I like the more experimental arrangement on “city of dreams”, it really compliments the progression, which is also interesting. Excellent sax. Reminded me a bit of Michael Brecker. The second half of this song rocks. Such great taste in the guitar solo, again. I didn’t want it to end.
The arpeggio parts in “Sunday afternoon”, very nicely done. doubling them on the piano really gave it a wonderful effect. A very hopeful sound for a very hopeful song.
The intro on “shine your light” is so well done, wistful and a bit mournful. Fretless bass was a great choice. This song has the perfect snare drum. Please pass on my compliments, such excellent taste. The chorus of this song was like a shock of lightning when it first arrived. I was playing the record quite loud in the car, by myself, and something in that soaring guitar line was very touching.
“4 letter word” is simply a beautiful, delicate song. Sometimes a song like this collapses under its own weight, but not yours – it is elevated in the second half by the accordion. The French here have great affection for the accordion and I have come to understand what a sweet feeling it brings to a quiet moment in a song like this. beyond all words… the extra added high harmony on the last chorus makes me so happy every time I hear it.
“Miracle carwash” was troubling me for quite a while but I could not figure out why… it’s a lot of fun, perfectly arranged, all the playing is really good and tight, excellent reggae beat… the solo has this strange and fun wandering quality that I really enjoyed. After quite a few listens, I have realized that perhaps it is a bit too fast, it has this idea of a lazy summer day and in my head I keep expecting it to be a little slower. This is a very individual thing, and very minor. Still very enjoyable.
“Long and winding road”, for me, is a very well-done pop song in the classic style. No concession to trend or fashion. Who played the harmonica? A great surprise. Also the guitar sounds in the quiet pause near the end, wonderful depth on those. Very atmospheric setup and then a good positive solo. Great good vibes, like a good pop song should.
“Promised land” is just the opposite, such a dark mood. the music is the perfect expression of the sad story in the lyrics. The guitar here, my god! The vibrato shakes with outrage. Once again I didn’t want it to end. But then the perfect interlude before the sudden ending… so many times, a story like this ends suddenly, and not happily.
What an amazing song you have chosen for the ending of the album. “inner child of mine” is in constant battle for top rank, against “airborne”. It depends on my mood. The opening chords are just a joy. I’m going to steal them, I think… hahaha. The counterpoint to female vocal, then coming together for the ending, very powerful. The mix here is so perfect, powerful guitar chords are present but not trying to take all the attention. This is excellent technical work that serves the music very well. When this song is playing, it commands my full presence.
Honestly I did not know what to expect from your music, but I certainly did not expect to be so overwhelmed by it. Please accept my compliments, and my gratitude, and my wish that perhaps there will be more music in the future!
